Back in black

After a gap of approximately two years (completing the EduSci module and the optional studies in the middle) I resume today my blog and hence the rest of my studies. A lot of things have changed from the beginning, especially in the professional scope. I took a break in my studies because of new professional challenges within the aviation sector and now - because of the current situation - I get back to those studies. So as in a hypothetical flight with its take-off and middle turbulences, I hope to find my way back to the runway to perform a successful landing.

As I did before, I flew from Helsinki to Oulu to be present at the two-day presentation sessions. Strange trip with almost empty terminals in both airports, masks, social distancing and extra controls. Quite different to what I am used to. In Oulu it was a very nice surprise to discover the new campus in Linnanmaa. It is great to know that OAMK does not miss the pulse to compete with other universities of applied sciences and bet on the future, searching for synergies with other universities.

Comparisons are odious but I must admit that I got a wonderful impression of my new schoolmates and teachers after such a long time. People from very different backgrounds and age ranges but in many cases with a broad experience in the teaching sector.

The first concepts shown were related to the structure of this Professional Teacher Education diploma and its (unusual) structure. Special stress was made over the concept of competence as a way to asses our own progress during our studies. It is clear that the abstract of that concept well worth an extra dose of attention and for this reason it will be again treated during our next first online session.

Good job J. and K. in the role of our guides, mentors, teachers, patient facilitators and listeners as they described and put light in a clear manner the description of the overall programme during these first starting days

During this session we covered the third of the main pillars of the teaching process. We started with PLANNING , then we touched IMPLEMENTING and now it was time for ASSESSMENT . Personally I was willing to touch this aspect. The first two topics are – in a very general way – quite clear but assessment intrigued me as being part of the final judgement given to a student and the possible effects on student's motivation. OUR PLANNING :  we started our preparations for our next teaching sessions relatively late. I say relatively because between our last and our next sessions there was time for the Educational Science module. The high level of pressure on some colleagues was perfectly understandable as everyone has its own personal responsibilities added to the deadlines for this session.
